Corral es el puerto más antiguo del sur de Chile y el
más importante del periodo colonial del país. Sus
fortificaciones y ruinas dan cuenta de las terribles
batallas que aquí se desplegaron en distintos
intentos por la ocupación de Valdivia. No fue hasta
el 4 de febrero de 1820, cuando Lord Thomas
Cochrane, en compañía del Sargento Mayor Jorge
Beauchef, lideró una de las gestas más épicas de la
independencia. Corral era un fuerte inexpugnable;
sin embargo, luego de una lucha rápida y violenta,
los chilenos al mando de Beauchef, se adueñaron
del lugar y tomaron como prisionero al Gobernador
Coronel Fausto del Hoyo, quien no podía creer que
con tan pocos hombres hubieran logrado traspasar
las fortificaciones de las que tanto se enorgullecía el
Imperio español.

Cada verano la comunidad corraleña realiza una
representación histórica, en la cual intervienen
actores y jóvenes estudiantes de la comuna. Así, nos
hacen partícipes de estos eventos de una manera
única e inolvidable.
Corral is the oldest port in Southern Chile and
the most important in the colonial period of the
country. Its fortifications and ruins account for
the terrible battles fought here in the different
attempts to occupy Valdivia. It was not until
February 4 1820, when Lord Thomas Cochrane,
along with sergeant major Jorge Beauchef, led one
of the most epic feats of the independence. Corral
was inexpugnable; however, after a violent and
swift fight, the Chileans led by Beauchef took over
the fort, taking prisoner Governor Colonel Fausto
del Hoyo, who could not believe that a handful of
men had managed to trespass the fortifications
that were the pride of the Spanish Empire.
Each summer, the Corral community performs a
historic reenactment, in which actors and young
students from town are involved. Thus, they make us
part of these events in a unique, unforgettable way.
