Las olas van y vienen sobre las costas de la Isla de
los Pingüinos, ubicada en Maiquillahue, San José
de la Mariquina. Una gran colonia de pingüinos de
Humboldt (Spheniscus humboldti), que puede alcanzar
alrededor de 400 individuos en temporada de verano,
se congrega para anidar durante los meses de
septiembre y marzo. Su letargo en tierra contrasta
con su agilidad y audacia bajo el agua donde alcanzan
una velocidad de hasta 36 kilómetros por hora.
La comunidad Mapuche Lafquenche de este sector
ha protegido durante años la Punta de Maiquillahue:
veneran sus costas y piden al mar por salud y
bienestar. Orgullosos de su tierra, estos notables
artesanos y diestros pescadores obtienen día a día el
sustento que les brinda la naturaleza, conscientes de
la importancia de atesorar su cuidado.
Surfistas en la playa de Mehuín (página 90). Surfistas
de todo el país y del extranjero se reúnen durante todo
el año en la playa de Mehuín para disfrutar de sus
olas de más de 2 mt de altura. La altura que alcanzan
sus aguas turbulentas genera las condiciones
ideales para los amantes de este deporte. Además
de su hermosa playa, Mehuín resulta un atractivo
turístico que destaca por su patrimonio natural y su
gastronomía ancestral.

The height of the turbulent waters generates the
ideal conditions for the lovers of this sport. Besides

ancestral gastronomy.
